Review: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Viewed: Theater

To be honestly truthful I really enjoyed this movie and was most surprised by how good if not at least decent this movie turned out to be.

The plot of the movie is pretty simple and you can probably figure it based on the title.  You can probably guess that there are a number of stupid things bound to happen in a movie with such a title.  What you wouldn't guess is that the movie knows its stupid.  My biggest fear for this movie was that it was going to play it all too serious and dark.  Don't get me wrong the movie is very serious and dark but there's this dumbness to it that makes it oh so enjoyable.  It's hard to explain.  I guess what I'm trying to say is the director knew this movie was going to be a labeled and reviewed as dumb.  So he makes a super serious dark dumb movie and in my opinion he succeeds.  Instead of boring us to death with true historical story of Abraham Lincoln we get only the very basic.  Everything presented about Lincoln could be read in a 1st grade American History book.  Then to even greater success the introduction of vampires makes sense in a nonsensical way.  Rather then give this super big back story to the vampires or establish who they are the movie just says these are your average vampires and they are bad.  Which is really smart.  Basically the title it so perfect because its exactly what the movie is nothing more nothing less.  It's about Abraham Lincoln hunting Vampires.

One last thing actually two last things but they're both related to Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes.  First off visually speaking I think these movies are very comparable in style and tone that is.  The way the action is choreographed (big word there Trevor) and just the look of the film is very similar to the recent mystery solving films.  The second thing I want to compare is the dialogue.  Here I think Vampire Hunter succeeds while Holmes does not.  As I said in my review of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows one of my problems with the Robert Downey Jr. movies is that I struggle to understand what the character's are telling each other or what's going on from moment to moment.  Now I will admit that maybe I'm just stupid and that's why I don't enjoy the Holmes movies that much.  That being said Vampire Hunter may be a little bit of an extreme to the other side I still think it does a much better job at handling its story and dialogue without losing me.  That being said I understand that Abraham Lincoln and Sherlock Holmes are two completely different people/movies.

There review done.

Oh and when Abe gets old looking boy does he look like Liam Neeson.

Judgement Sentence:  A smart dumb movie
